My old Kindle is a good paperweight, too (plus there’s a word game my hubs still plays on it, but that’s it :)
I love StorytimeOnline - through SAG-AFTRA, with wonderful actors reading the books that come to life - yes, more of a performance, but kids still see the actors reading (and really enjoying) the books, so I think it’s really great.
The thing I liked about Hoopla is that you got your title right away. Our library recent switched exclusively to Libby and it is hard to get used to the waiting times - sometimes 3 months or more for current titles. Hoopla also had many movies and other videos.
Reading Rainbow for life!! That show was so instrumental to my childhood. I’ve never heard of these apps (comes out from under my rock) and imagine they would come in handy when we start our foray into the digital world.
I do think consuming story in any format is beneficial, but we lean toward stories on paper in our house too!
No reading app recommendations but if you want learning to read apps, we’ve had success with Duo ABC and the Endless Alphabet package. Lots of letter learning happened for my eldest on those when my 2nd was born.
Yes, we haven't gotten very far into the digital mainstream but I'm always curious to figure out what *I'D* be comfortable having my kid exposed to and I do think these apps are pretty good that way. Thank you so much for sharing the learning to read apps! I'm definitely bookmarking those for the future.
I haven’t used these apps but we tried to watch 90s era Reading Rainbow on prime one night and my kids weren’t interested! We have the Amazon fire tablets with the kindle and Libby apps but my kids mostly read library books we check out. I read more e books than them mainly for book club when I don’t want a hardcover copy of every thriller they pick.
Oh that's so interesting! Maybe they innately know that this is a relic from the past 😂 I think that should be a part of the summer reading challenge series... Make your kids watch 90s shows about reading (Reading Rainbow, Wishbone, etc.) and see how they react.
Reading rainbow 🌈 !!! :) Actually, thinking back on my childhood, there were a few last minute homework attempts that were tackled after the library had closed….an app would have helped 😝

I’d forgotten about that-so great
Thank you for this, this is INCREDIBLE!!! I'm sorry I'm responding so late. I thought I already had!
I'm glad to be re-reminded of storylineonline too - it really is SO wonderful :) :)

That’s such a good point! And one of the reasons I turned to Hoopla in the first place. Going to edit the post and add that in. Thank you!

Definitely would have helped! I guess we learned the old fashioned way of the agony of procrastination 😂
