Thanks to everyone who participated in last week’s challenge and supported reading in their local community by donating children’s books to the Little Free Libraries around them!
Here’s the activity for Week 3 of the Summer Reading Challenge: WHAT’S THAT WORD?. Let’s get to it!
Grab a dictionary, open a random page, and you and your kid(s) pick a word from that page and learn the definition. You and the kids now have to use this word throughout the week! If you want to be competitive, whoever uses it the most (correctly), wins. 🏅
What you’ll need:
A dictionary
Reading buddies
Purpose:
Building our vocabulary
Adapting by age:
For babies and toddlers, you get to pick any word and use it as often as you want around your baby. Ideally, it’s an object so you can pair the word and the object together. If you have a toddler, encourage them to say it with you.
For younger kids, use a children’s dictionary for this activity
For big kids, use a regular dictionary
Please come back and tell us the word you picked and how you’ve used it!
If you want to catch up or just revisit the prior weeks’ reading challenges, you can check them out here:
No judgment! I do think a children's dictionary is very helpful to have on hand (it makes for a lot of fun to just flip through). I personally really like the Scholastic Children's Dictionary but highly encourage you to see what your library has available and see if it's worth adding to your personal collection. So basically, I insist you go to the library 😆
I remember my brother and I doing a dictionary challenge like this when we were teens, it was so much fun!
So cool that you did this in your childhood. It's so much fun!
Sri... no judgement... we need a dictionary.
