We try to get picture books from the library and buy chapter books but I’m a sucker and will buy 1-2 books if we are in an indie bookshop. We went to this cool children’s literature centre (7 stories in Newcastle) and a very nice indie shop in the seaside town nearby so came home from holiday with 4 books.
I think you'd have to have an absolutely iron will to resist, especially on holiday! I don't think rules exist when you're on holiday haha. Off to Google this literature center and see if we need to add Newcastle to our list of places to visit whenever we are next going to the UK. :)
We picked up two new flying eye titles - the Hilda book (we’ve been loving the audible stories) and a graphic novel. I love the matte paper and the illustration style. A Cressida Cowell book and The Elemental Detectives. My son’s 6th birthday tomorrow and I bought him a nonfiction Viking book and the D’Aulaire myths, both used via WOB.
We have a pretty good donation cycle for outgrown books - to the library if they don’t have a copy (ours often puts them into circulation) or to the school. And I try to buy a decent amount used.
We are a no limits household. With one exception: if you have several unread new books (purchased, not library loans) piled up then those need to be read before new ones are purchased.

It’s so cool! I really like Newcastle as a city.

Those are solid books you’ve picked up! I love d’Aulaires’ myths and you can’t go wrong with Cressida Cowell!
Does your library have a cycle for donations? I’d love to donate ours but only twice a year do they accept donations.
This hits home!
So glad it resonated, Victoria!

That's a good rule! Definitely one I need to implement temporarily since I *still* haven't got through all our new books. Eep.
